As a member of our media department here at CurrentMarketing, I am a firm believer in the power of numbers. I am especially impressed when the power is driven solely by a large group of people, working together to make a difference. Our world has experienced natural and man-made disasters of equal magnitude, all of which have produced some of the most moving scenes and inspirational stories.

You hear it everywhere you go. "I just don't have time." I truly believe that people want to help, but as life goes, most people can't seem to find the leftover hours in the day to volunteer at their local shelter, ring the Salvation Army Bell, or pack food boxes for Dare to Care.

When I first read about this company, I knew I had to share the story on UnderCurrent, because frankly everyone has time to text. We all have time and how easily we forget, that it's how you spend your time that really matters. We are now in the age, when a text message can be the beginning of a significant event in history.

mGive began as a 25-person mobile software company whose initial mission was to recruit non-profits to adopt mobile giving. Metro United Way, for example, can sign on and any fundraiser or donations they accept will be transmitted through text message. As grassroots movements go, it was very difficult for founder, James Eberhard, to recruit even one NPO to jump on board. Eberhard put over $4 million of his own money into the company before the morning of January 13, 2010 at 4:30a.m. when the State Department reached him to get a very specific mobile giving campaign going for Haiti.

Literally hours later his company launched a national campaign that allowed people to donate $10 to a number of different charities via cell phone. Thanks to the many cell phone carriers that waived their fees and allowed pledges to show up on the next month's bill, people could text the word HAITI to the number 90999 and the dollars would instantly show. And they did!

To date, more than $40 million has been raised for Haiti. We always say we need things faster and easier. It doesn't get much better than this! If you want to feel like you've helped in some small way, I urge you to find the time to text.  Here are just a few U.S. organizations offering mobile giving campaigns:

  • American Red Cross: Text the word “Haiti” to 90999 to donate $10.
  • The Clinton Bush Haiti Fund: Text the word “QUAKE” to 20222 to donate $10.
  • Salvation Army: Text the word “Haiti” to 52000 to donate $10.
  • UNICEF: Text the word “Hope10” or “UNICEF” to 20222 to donate $10.
  • National Religious Broadcasters (NRB): Text the word “Haiti” to 40579 to donate $10.
  • Save the Children Federation: Text the word “Save” or “Safe” to 20222 to donate $10.
  • World Vision: Text the word “Give” or “World” to 20222 to donate $10.
  • Americares: Text the word “Americares” to 25383 to donate $10.
  • Habitat for Humanity: Text the word “Habitat” to 25383 to donate $10.
  • American Jewish World Service: Text the word “AJWS” to 25383 to donate $10.

Everyone knows a gal's gotta have her shoes. For me, the arrival of a new pair from Zappos or Amazon makes my heart flutter. I'm happy to learn this week, PUMA has announced they will toss the standard cardboard shoebox for a bag. Stay with me...

This new design concept has been named, "The Clever Little Bag" and should roll out later this year, just in time for the holiday season. Yves Behar's development is a single folded sheet of cardboard in a reusable, recyclable bag, promised to protect the shoes from the time they leave the factory until they arrive to their final destination, i.e. my closet. PUMA reports the new packaging and manufacturing will reduce the paper used for shoeboxes by 65%, and it plans to make the remaining packaging materials fully sustainable by 2015.

Here are the stats (manufacturing to distribution):

  • Approximately 8,500 tons less paper will be consumed
  • 20 million Megajoules of electricity will be saved
  • 1 million liters less fuel oil will be used
  • 1 million liters of water will be saved
  • Up to 275 tons of plastic will be saved thanks to the replacement of traditional shopping bags with the lighter built-in bag

The bag itself is actually stitched with heat and it is made of non-woven polyester and is also recyclable. Why throw it away when you can use it around the house or as a shoe carrier during travel though? As a shoe lover who fully supports sustainability on all levels, I am digging the introduction of this Clever Little Bag and what it represents for the industry. I can't wait for the day when plastic shopping bags are long gone and we can rely on our favorite brands to fully commit to providing us tangible alternatives.

With most photos being captured digitally and stored on photo-sharing sites, it seems like the old-school use for the standard shoebox just aren't needed anymore. I've been a PUMA wearer for a long time, but this move just encourages me to support the brand and its mission to improve our environmental standards.

Now just to figure out what to do with all those old high school pictures.

As this blog posts, we are 7 days away from the Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon and MiniMarathon. I've seen more runners come out of their winter caves in the last month then I've ever seen. All ready to take on the 13.1 or 26.2 miles of scenic Louisville and Southern Indiana. I'm loving every minute of carb-loading!

Out of the roughly 140,000 (and growing) iphone apps, there are a few running apps out there that make life much easier for us road warriors. Like all location-based applications, the iMapMy team uses built in GPS technology on your iPhone to allow runners, cyclists and really any outdoor athletes to track their training. The most useful function in my opinion for our upcoming race day, is the Pace or Current Speed function.  Thanks to the GPS technology, you can track your current speed, lowest and highest speed, and also average speed during your workout. If you are training for the Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon or MiniMarathon, an application like this can be helpful leading up to race day, if you want to pick out a pace-keeper at the beginning or even if you're looking to qualify for another race.

Text updates have been around for a while, but those programs are preset to include certain intervals based on distance. With the most recent update to iMapMyRun, you can schedule automatic Facebook status and Twitter updates pre-race, choosing the updates you want by individual distance or time. I don't know about most other marathoners, but the last thing I want to do between gel intakes, is get my phone out and update while sweat drips down my hands. The app will automatically tweet or post for you while you're running!

The iMapMyRun also lets you download and view your maps in Google Earth, post them to your blog or website, and of course share your times or routes with friends on Facebook or Twitter during training season. I love competing with my running buddies via social media!

During my second interview with CurrentMarketing, there was this sort of " work hard to play really hard" vibe going on that I instantly connected with. In fact, as I left the interview and got back into my (very reliable) Honda Accord, I felt this indescribable feeling—I had met my perfect match! Thankfully, the CM team agreed and I scored the job as our Media Assistant!

My freshman year of college I joined a sorority (secret handshakes and all), in hopes to meet new people and gain that “sense of self” in the midst of initiation rituals, tailgates, and 8am lecture groups. I ended up making best friends, learning stuff, and having the time of my life all while earning my degree. Pretty sweet. I anticipate my future at CM to be of similar formation.

Take for instance, lunchtime on my first day. We all gather around the table; I pull my turkey and cheese sandwich out and start chomping in hopes to avoid any awkward silence. In this moment, Katy Miller (my boss) picks up a magazine featuring Patrick Swayze’s new A&E Series, “The Beast”. We have a good laugh and this sparks a conversation regarding my undying love for the blockbuster hit, “Point Break” featuring the dirty dancer himself, Gary Busey and heartthrob Keanu Reeves. In my opinion this 90’s flick is the perfect mix of comedy, drama (Busey bites it and I shed a tear every time), and action. My selection is accompanied by chuckling, but it also initiates a good twenty-minutes of down right fun. We are naming favorite movies, worst movies, zombie thrillers…and we are laughing. The casual atmosphere inspires me to admit that I actually own “Point Break” on DVD. Lesson #1 at CM: Some things are better left unsaid…or on the clearance shelves at Wal-Mart.

At any rate, I am thrilled to be here and grateful to everyone for making me feel so welcome! I’m ready to dive into all things Media and I’m super stoked about the two ladies I’ll be learning from. Thanks for taking a chance on a kid, CM. I won’t let you down!
