I have never been to the actual Derby race, but I have been to numerous KDF events. It's not only something that I enjoyed as a kid, but that I can now share with my daughter and nephews. While the Derby gets the big national coverage, it's the KDF events that makes me feel like we're not only celebrating a great tradition, but our great community.

I think it's a shame that you are not more proud of your city and its effort to include more of the population in Derby events. Only a small fraction of the population here is able to ever experience the actual Race. I am a native and have lived here for 33 years and have NEVER been to the Derby. That's why I am so glad to have the opportunity to participate in events like the Derby Festival puts on - it makes me feel like a part of the excitement.

In addition, I am really proud of KDF on the national festival scene - they win numerous awards every year for the quality of the festival. They have helped to make Louisville what it is today and you should be proud of that too.

It's interesting to me that you didn't use your real name on your comment. Perhaps you are embarrassed by the bigotry you have demonstrated toward people who can only afford to participate in the hype of the Derby through KDF's events.

Seeing that there are virtually no comments yet, I'll jump in. It's appalling that Louisville has stretched a 2-minute horse race into a 2-week, tacky cry for attention. I guess it's understandable because Derby is one of the few things that are classy and interesting in this rust-belt berg, but it's still painful to watch local rednecks try to cleave to the event by staging stuff like bed races, a lousy parade and a gaudy fireworks show. I'm glad that the race itself is the only thing that most of the world sees about this, or I'd be embarrassed.

P.S. the fact that you have comment moderation enabled, and you therefore have no comments, show that most commenters agree with me.
